How To Calculate Your Chart Manually
Decoding the Sky the Old-School Way
Before online calculators and instant chart wheels, astrologers calculated birth charts by hand — using astronomical tables, math, and meticulous precision. It’s a sacred, detailed process that transforms raw celestial data into a personal cosmic map.
If you’re ready to step into traditional astrology, here’s how to calculate your chart manually.

🕒 1. Gather Exact Birth Data
Precision is everything.
You’ll need:
- Birth date
- Exact birth time (down to the minute if possible)
- Birth location (city & country)
Even a few minutes can shift the Rising sign and house placements.
📚 2. Obtain an Ephemeris
An ephemeris is a table listing planetary positions for every day of the year.
Using your birth date, locate the exact degrees of:
Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn (and outer planets if included).
This gives you the zodiac degree for each planet on your birth day.
⏱ 3. Adjust for Exact Birth Time
Planets (especially the Moon) move throughout the day.
If you weren’t born at midnight, you’ll need to calculate how far the Moon (and possibly other fast-moving bodies) traveled between 00:00 and your birth time.
This requires simple proportional math based on the daily motion listed in the ephemeris.
🌍 4. Calculate Local Sidereal Time
To determine your Rising sign and house cusps, you must calculate Local Sidereal Time (LST).
This involves:
- Converting your birth time to Universal Time (UT)
- Adjusting for longitude
- Using sidereal time tables
This step determines which zodiac sign was rising on the eastern horizon at your birth.
⬆ 5. Determine the Ascendant
Using house tables (such as Placidus or Equal House tables), locate the degree rising at your calculated LST.
That zodiac degree becomes your Ascendant — the gateway to your entire chart.
🏠 6. Plot the Houses
With the Ascendant degree identified, use house tables to determine the remaining house cusps.
Each cusp marks the beginning of a life area — identity, money, communication, home, love, career, and more.
🪐 7. Place the Planets in Signs & Houses
Now, combine everything:
- Plot planetary degrees into the zodiac wheel.
- Determine which house each planet falls into based on cusp degrees.
Your natal chart wheel is now complete.
🔮 8. Calculate Aspects
Finally, measure the angles between planets:
- 0° = Conjunction
- 60° = Sextile
- 90° = Square
- 120° = Trine
- 180° = Opposition
Allow small degree “orbs” for accuracy.
These angles reveal how planetary energies interact.
✨ Final Cosmic Insight
Calculating your chart manually isn’t just math — it’s ritual.
It connects you directly to the mechanics of the sky. You feel the precision. The movement. The cosmic choreography unfolding in real time.
It may take patience, tables, and careful calculations…
but when you draw that final wheel by hand, you realize something profound:
The universe isn’t random.
It’s measurable.
And at the moment you were born, it was perfectly aligned. 💫
